reminder that Octavian canonly has delusions and seems to have little grip on reality. reminder that Octavian probably has psychosis. reminder that it was used to demonise him, whether intentionally or not. reminder that in a way he’s written as an ableist stereotype.

I think Rick tried to make it an undertone so we could realize he turned out that way because no one took him seriously or helped him and they just overlooked/ignored his issues so he felt alone and betrayed when the Greeks came because they were almost instantly welcomed and supported even when they (accidentally) bombed New Rome, but they never showed him (someone actually important because “uh, I see the future?”) any affection or made him feel welcome.

But almost all readers overlooked that too because from the POV of the characters he’s just an annoying little shit so the readers treat him like that too.

The undertone is definitely there though, just like with Percy’s depression and Smelly Gabe being physically abusive towards Percy and (probably) Sally.

id love to see it like that but rick has, many times, made it clear that, in his belief, octavian is bad; he has also stated that he doesn’t write mentally ill characters (and that demigods are just “stronger” so they don’t get them as easily. keep in mind this is referring as to why percy and annabeth dont have ptsd after tartarus)

gods this ask was from forever ago and what better time to answer it than at 1 in the morning

  • his favourite movie as a kid was mulan because “becoming” a boy and going off to war was his dream as a young roman
  • he chose the name octavian based off augustus bc, hey, that guy wasn’t the epitome of hypermasc buff roman soldier yet still was great (as in power and notability, not like a good person) so he could be too
  • his shitty fashion sense is based off clothes that hide his shape and his lack of knowledge about how to dress himself because he was never taught how
  • he’s more competitive towards cis men because he feels the need to prove himself better so people respect him
  • in fact that’s where some, if not a lot, of his drive and need for power came from, the desire to prove himself worthy
  • he has spent a considerable amount of time in prayer to bacchus for help and guidance
  • he’s 110% jealous of jason because he’s everything octavian wishes he was
  • more muscular, masculine, respected, he didn’t need to continuously prove himself the way octavian did
  • and that’s about all i have for it being 1am thanks for coming to my ted talk

mmmm can we talk about how much octavian being “bad” shits on survivors like?? he was raised to be ambitious and strong in the same “vincere, aut mori” camp that encourages children to lead and fight like fucking adults of course he’s not gonna be content with not having power. The only reason Reyna and such aren’t like that is because they weren’t raised with that toxic mentality. But for some reason, it’s his fault that he has that perspective. Not only that, but Gaea influencing is also apparently his fault? For fucks sake it’s canon that he thought her speaking to him was Apollo and that he was helping. The way he was manipulated to think was not him, and the books being like “Wow Octavian’s such a piece of shit! Helping Gaea and desperately wanting power! Look at him killing himself! Such a good thing that he was lead to doing that! He killed Gaea who? Sorry all I know is a lil bitch!” is,, bad

and im adding this because i didn’t think i got my point in here clearly enough with my tendency to go off on tangents: Acting like the way Octavian acts is because it’s just his personality and not because of trauma shits on “bad survivors” who act out and aren’t soft and gentle
